Small Angle X-Ray Diffraction

B.C. 70811

Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT – with its headquarters in Genoa (Italy) is a non-profit institution with the primary goal of creating and disseminating scientific knowledge and strengthening Italy's technological competitiveness. Our research areas cover scientific topics of high innovative content representing the most advanced frontiers of modern technology, with wide application opportunities in various fields ranging from medicine to industry, from computer science to robotics, life sciences and nanobiotechnology.

IIT has created an IIT-Network of centers within Italian research institutions based in Lecce, Milan, Naples, Pisa, Turin, Parma, Trento and Rome.

The Center for Advanced Biomaterials for Healthcare at CRIB (CABHC@CRIB; Naples, Italy) uses cutting edge technologies to engineer biologically inspired material platforms for applications in the biomedical sector.

Applications are open for a post-doctoral position on X-Ray diffraction technique inside the Laboratory of the Center for Advanced Biomaterials for Health Care (IIT@CRIB) in Napoli where a high resolution SAXS/GiSAXs system has been recently installed.

The research activity is part of "BERSAGLI – Bersagli, sonde e segnali in terapia diagnostica - POR Campania FESR 2007/2013 O.O. 2.1 - CUP B25C13000310007- ID SMILE 022" project granted by Regione Campania and included in TENS platform at CABHC@CRIB in Naples.

The Post Doc will focus on interdisciplinary research in the field of nanotechnology and the emphasis will be on understanding how the physical properties are governed by processing, structure and composition and how they can influence nanostructure’s properties for application in the field of nanomedicine.

The beamline is primarily dedicated to material science and related areas of nanotechnology and the post doc will perform the manipulations with experimental small-angle scattering and grazing incident data files such as: averaging, subtraction, merging, extrapolation to zero concentration and curve fitting. It will evaluate the integral parameters from Guinier and Porod plots such as radius of gyration (for globular, flat and rod-type particles). He/she will analyze a small angle x-ray scatter pattern powder, suspension and film from a known sample at different Temperatures.

Candidate should have a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemical or Material Engineer or a closely related subject. He/she should have a qualified experience in applying scattering techniques (X-ray or light or neutron scattering) to study the microscale or nanoscale structure of particle systems in terms of such parameters as averaged particle sizes, shapes, distribution, and surface-to-volume ratio.

In addition, basic knowledge of scattering data analysis and modelling will be essential.

Experience about Bruker Nanostar GiSAXs system will be preferred.
Interested applicants should submit their CV electronically outlining experience and qualifications, list of publications, a statement of research interests and plans and the names of at least two referees to This email address is being protected from spambots. Please apply before August 31, 2015.

In order to comply with Italian law (art. 23 of Privacy Law of the Italian Legislative Decree n. 196/03), the candidate is kindly asked to give his/her consent to allow IIT to process his/her personal data.
