Post Docs in Smart Materials

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia with headquarters in Genova (Italy), is a non-profit institution with the primary goal of creating and disseminating scientific knowledge and strengthening Italy's technological competitiveness. Current IIT scientific program has a strong multidisciplinary character, merging expertise from different platforms from neuroscience to drug discovery, from nanotechnologies to computation.

IIT has recently created an IIT-Network of centers at Italian research institutions in Lecce, Milan, Naples, Pisa, Turin, Parma and Trento. The Center for Advanced Biomaterials for Healthcare at CRIB uses cutting edge technologies to engineer bio-logically inspired material platforms for applications in the biomedical sector.

Applications are invited for the following two post doctoral positions:

1. Research in the area of smart materials – Leather Science and Technology

Post doctoral position available for highly motivated candidates in a project concerning the implementation of nanotechnologies in the leather industry. The project aims at exploiting proprietary processes to conjugate nanometric objects with animal dermis in order to produce leather goods with novel properties and functions, i.e. mechanical, surface and transport properties. In particular, the research activities concern the development of new processes to tan nanoparticle-dermis composites along with their chemical/physical characterization. The research activities are part of the "Implementation of bio and nanotechnologies for the production of novel leather goods" project, granted by MIUR, within the Smart Materials platform at the Center for Advanced Biomaterials for Health Care of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT@CRIB) in Naples. The ideal candidate should have a consolidated experience in the Leather Science and Technology. Candidates who hold a PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The candidate will undertake research activities in laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art technologies including optical microscopy, multiphoton and STED microscopy, dynamic light scattering, ellipsometry, SEM, TEM, scanning force microscopy.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with three major industries operating in the field of leather making process, therefore team-working is strongly desired.

Position and salary will be commensurate to the CV and the experience of the candidate.

2. Research in the area of smart materials – Design and Fabrication of microfluidic devices

Post doctoral position available for highly motivated candidates in a project concerning the design and fabrication of miniaturized devices to sort and purify micron sized bioprobes. The projects encompasses all the aspects of the production process, namely simulation, manufacturing and characterization. The research activities are part of the "Implementation of bio and nanotechnologies for the production of novel leather goods" project, granted by MIUR, within the Smart Materials platform at the Center for Advanced Biomaterials for Health Care of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT@CRIB) in Naples.

The ideal candidate should have a consolidated experience in design and fabrication of microfluidic devices. Experiences in particle sorting and purification will be considered as an advantage. Candidates who hold a PhD in Engineering, Physics, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The candidate will undertake research activities in laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art technologies including, multiphoton and STED microscopy, dynamic light scattering, SEM, TEM, scanning force microscopy, along with microfabrication equipments.
