Postdoctoral position on Interconnecting artificial and living systems for advanced prosthetics

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia with headquarters in Genoa (Italy) is a non-profit institution with the primary goal of creating and disseminating scientific knowledge and strengthening Italy's technological competitiveness. IIT has recently created an IIT-Network of centers at Italian research institutions in Lecce, Milan, Naples, Pisa, Turin, Parma, Rome and Trento. The Center for Advanced Biomaterials for Healthcare at CRIB uses cutting edge technologies to engineer biologically inspired material platforms for applications in the biomedical sector.

We invite applications for one Post-doctoral position on "Interconnecting artificial and living systems for advanced prosthetics". The project is aimed at design and production of a sensorized artefact connected to an actuator via an external controller, mimicking the last phalanx of a finger, totally encased into an intimately adhering and living human skin equivalent.

The nature of the project is multidisciplinary and interdepartmental. Therefore the research activities will be supported by:

The Robotics, Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department, in Genoa

The candidate will be responsible in producing a human skin equivalent, shaped to coat a sealed tube, mimicking a finger. He/she will assess the impermeability of stratum corneum and human skin equivalent viability in "normal environmental conditions" (i.e. out of a controlled environment in terms of temperature, sterile conditions, saturating humidity etc.). Moreover, by introducing a temperature or pressure sensor in the artefact prototype the candidate will assess its response to an external stimulus (i.e. heat/pressure) with a feedback (actuation).

The duration of the project is 2 years, the candidate is expected to work both at the Center for Advanced Biomaterials for Health Care@CRIB in Naples and at the Robotics, Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department in Genoa, depending on the specific phase of the project.

Required expertise: The ideal candidate is a post-doc with a background in tissue engineering and bioreactor design for 3D cell culture. In particular, experience in biomaterials as well as homotypic and hetherotypic 3D tissue production (in particular dermis/epidermis) in controlled fluid dynamics environment is preferred. Due to the interdisciplinarity of the project a background in electromechanical design is a plus. PhD in one of the following or related areas is recommended, but not compulsory: Biotechnology, Tissue Engineering, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Engineering.

Optional expertise: previous experience with tactile/haptic interfaces, MEMS, polymeric composites preparation and characterization.
